If I were to write a book about myself it would be called, Hungry Lady. I have a large appetite for food, learning, and life. I'm always making plans and setting goals. Sometimes I have to check myself in order to stay more in the present and enjoy things in the here and now.
Growing up my sisters and I were really into practical jokes. It is likely that they were funnier to us than anyone else, but here is one that I will always remember. My parents had this Donahue paperback autobiography with this really goofy looking photo of Donahue on the cover, see?

Well my sister and I thought it would be funny to pretend that each one of us was reading the book (because it is something that we would never do). So we would take turns planting the book in each others spaces -- on the bed, in a backpack, at the dinner table -- with a book mark in it, so as to say "you are reading the Donahue book". This went on for quite a while and then died down. A year or so later I won the practical joke when I wrapped the book as a christmas gift and gave it to my sister. We still talk about this ridiculous practical joke to this day. See, not funny to you, right?
I am a first grade teacher and have been teaching first grade for ten years in a public school in Brooklyn. This year I am working part time and spending more time with our three year old daughter, Delphine.
Because I am part time I am working as a math intervention teacher for first and second graders this year. I am also working on getting my ESL and my Special Education licenses. This course is part of that endeavor. It has been a lot of fun! I have been teaching literacy to 6 and 7 year olds for a decade. I am fascinated by early literacy and teaching young children how to read and write. Over time I have seen how factors like age, development, prior experience, culture, learning profile/style, and teaching, all impact a child's learning process. I am very interested in literacy intervention and helping children overcome difficulties with learning how to read and write. I have found that the more I know about helping all types of learners, the better teacher I am to any student, not just children who struggle.
I am not in the MSIT program. I am a graduate of Bank Street College with a masters in Elementary Childhood Education. I am licensed NYC DOE teacher.
I really don't know much about new literacies but and am very interested in learning!
I have no concerns about the course. I am excited to be here and to bring my prior teaching experience to the learning process.
